Deposits, not no-shows: a booking playbook for service pros

Stylists, technicians, tutors, consultants and every other service pro: how to fill your calendar, protect your time with deposits, and get paid for virtual and doorstep work.

A weekly booking calendar full of appointments with deposits paid, and a booking confirmation for braids on Saturday at 10:00.

It’s 11 a.m. The chair is ready, the braiding hair is laid out, and the client who promised to come at 10 isn’t answering. The morning is gone, and so is the money.

If you sell your time, a no-show isn’t an inconvenience. It’s lost income you can’t get back. Here’s how to stop losing it.

Why no-shows happen

A booking made by DM costs the customer nothing. “I’ll come Saturday” is easy to say and easy to forget. A deposit changes that: once someone has paid to hold your time, they’re far more likely to show up, or to let you know in advance.

1. Put your calendar where customers can see it

Stop answering “what time works for you?” Publish your real availability and let customers pick a slot. On SplashArk you set:

  • the days and hours you work
  • how long each service takes
  • whether it’s at the customer’s door, at your place, or virtual

2. Set a deposit that matches the risk

There’s no universal number, but a simple rule helps: the more time or materials you commit before the job, the higher the deposit. A few examples:

  • Hair and beauty: a deposit that covers your materials and the slot.
  • Event services (décor, MC/DJ, photography): a larger deposit, because you turn down other work for that date.
  • Home repairs: a call-out deposit, with the rest paid on completion.

3. Write a refund policy and stick to it

A clear policy protects you and reassures the customer. For example: “Deposit refunded if you cancel at least 24 hours before. Late cancellations and no-shows forfeit the deposit.” Customers see it before they book, so there are no arguments later.

4. Take your work online

Many services don’t need you in the room. Tutoring, coaching, consulting, legal advice, fitness training, mentoring: all of these can be booked and delivered over in-app video calls. That means you can serve clients in another city, or another country, with no travel.

5. Let regulars rebook themselves

Weekly lessons, monthly maintenance, regular training sessions: recurring bookings on SplashArk book and bill themselves. No more chasing parents at the end of the month for sessions you already taught.

6. Quote bigger jobs properly

A wedding, a full renovation, a corporate event: jobs like these need a quote, not a price tag. Send a custom invoice with the line items and the deposit due. The customer pays in one tap, and you both have a record of what was agreed.

7. Get found by people nearby

Customers searching for an AC technician want one close by, today. Location-based discovery shows your profile to people near you first, and reviews and verification badges help them choose you.

35 categories, one booking desk

SplashArk supports 35 service categories, including AC technician, beauty, caregiver, carpentry, chef, cleaner, consultant, driver, event planner, home fix, IT specialist, legal counsel, mechanic, MC/DJ, photographer, realtor, tailor, trainer, tutor and UGC creator. If your trade isn’t listed exactly, list under the closest category.
